Mountain lion reportedly scratches man’s leg in Southwest Colorado – CBS Denver
(CBS4) – A 47-year-old man suffered minor injuries when a mountain lion appeared to claw his leg in southwest Colorado. It happened on Sunday evening in Montezuma County, near Lebanon.
The victim’s name is Michael Warren, and he told Colorado Parks and Wildlife that it happened right outside his home.
CPW described the attack in a press release as follows:
“He was at his home when he heard a bang on his porch and his dogs indoors started barking aggressively. He thought his house cats might be fighting on the porch, so he headed out to investigate.”
“He opened the door to his porch and placed his right leg in the open doorway while trying to keep his dogs indoors. Shortly after putting his leg between the open door and the porch, he felt something grab his leg. He looked and said he saw a mountain lion running away.”
Video captured by a surveillance camera showed the mountain lion on Warren’s property.
Warren has multiple stab wounds on his leg, apparently inflicted by mountain lion claws. He chose not to go to the hospital.
Despite extensive search attempts, which included setting traps and using dogs, the mountain lion could not be found. The agency is asking for the public’s help in its investigation. They believe it is a young animal – an “underadult” mountain lion.
Two of Warren’s cats recently went missing, and wildlife officials believe it may have something to do with the mountain lion entering the home on Sunday. Last month, a mountain lion apparently killed some nearby chickens and a cat.
Mountain lions rarely attack humans. There have been 26 known cases of it in Colorado since 1990. Three of these attacks killed people.
