Dual cold fronts close to ending record heat – CBS Denver
DENVER (CBS4) – Thursday will be even warmer than Wednesday, when Denver set a record high of 74 degrees. Friday will also be warm before two cold fronts bring abrupt changes for the weekend.
The existing record high for Thursday in Denver is 76 degrees on March 3, 1921. The forecast calls for 75 degrees, but some neighborhoods could easily reach at least 76 degrees.
Elsewhere in Colorado, temperatures Thursday will hit the 50s in the highlands, 60s are expected on the west slope and lower 80s are likely expected in southeastern Colorado.
The combination of warm temperatures, low humidity, and dry soil means fire hazards are high for areas like Lamar, La Junta, and Springfield. As a result, one of the first Red Flag Warnings of the year was issued Thursday from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for the southeast corner of Colorado. If a fire were to break out in this region, it could spread quickly.
The fire threat continues to shift north and west on Friday amid persistently warm and dry conditions. A fire weather alert has already been posted for the I-70 corridor east of the subway area and the I-25 corridor south of Lone Tree. That watch is likely to become a red flag warning for the high fire risk on Friday.
Then the first of two cold fronts will arrive Friday night, causing snow to spread across the mountains while Denver and the Front Range get torrential rain Friday night. Rain will give way to slushy wet snow on Saturday morning before a break in precipitation is likely to develop on Saturday afternoon.
Then the second cold front will arrive, causing a better chance of snow along the entire city corridor on Saturday evening and Sunday while snow continues in the mountains. At that point, total snow accumulation in the Denver area is expected to be 2 to 6 inches, with the worst travel conditions on Sunday.
Most of the snow will end by Sunday evening, but light snow showers or snow flurries are possible through Monday morning. Then drier weather returns for Tuesday before another series of storms hit Colorado from Wednesday.
