The sisters $50 bets are the winners – but will the $6,300 bonus on the Bengals or $1,000 on the Rams? – Orange County Register
Three sisters in the San Fernando Valley this week jumped off the walls in anticipation of turning a $50 long bet into $6,300 if the Cincinnati Bengals win Super Bowl LVI on Sunday.
Teresa Dahlquist, 82, and her twin sister, Josephine Cavalluzzi, are both Woodland Hills residents, and her sister Mary Bartnicki, 91, of Canoga Park came to California via The Bronx, New York many years ago.
Dahlquist and Bartnicki were at Pahrump outside Las Vegas last year when they put $50 for the Bengals to win Super Bowl LVI at 125-1 odds at the time.
“We are gamblers,” Dahlquist said on Tuesday. “We love gambling. We were choosing teams to gamble on, and I said to my sister, Mary, I wanted a long shot. That was after the Super Bowl. She said, “You want a long shot, are you crazy”? ”
But the sisters have slightly different memories of how they bought that ticket that day.
“I never said you were crazy,” said Bartnicki, a self-proclaimed sports fan and Bengali. “I said do. I am a gambler”.
It was Bartnicki who chose the Bengals as a target.
The Cavalluzzi were not with them at the time.
“She gave us[money],” says Bartnicki. “We are partners forever. When we gamble, we split it up three ways.”
The National Football League consists of 32 teams, divided equally between the National Soccer Conference and the American Football Conference. Over the course of the year, the sisters bet on 10 teams and overcame each as they lost their chance at the Super Bowl, leaving the Bengals and Rams on a makeshift plaque hanging on the kitchen wall.
Bartnicki is responsible for potential winning tickets.
“If they win, that’s a whopping $1,000,” Bartnicki said of the Rams’ profit on their $50.
Bartnicki kept the tickets in a safe place throughout the season.
“I told my two sisters exactly where they were, because I was 91 years old and I thought maybe I was going to die,” Bartnicki said. “I never expected (the Bengalis) to (go to the Super Bowl). We were shocked.”
As part of the fun leading up to Super Bowl LVI, Bartnicki had a miniature magnetic football helmet on her kitchen fridge. Every time a team loses a chance to advance, she takes them down and hides them until only the Bengals and Rams remain.
On Sunday, Cavalluzzi’s son was throwing a big Super Bowl party in Silver Lake. The sisters are cooking up a storm just in case. All three will be coming to the Bengals, but only Bartnicki is a true fan.
And whether they win $6,300 on the Bengals or $1,000 on the Rams, each has a plan for their success.
“The joy of winning outweighs the pain of losing,” said Cavalluzzi, who plans to win Sunday and get to the craps table as soon as possible. “I’ll let it go.”
Bartnicki says she will use the winnings to pay her property taxes while Dahlquist wants to give her money to charity, which upsets her sister.
“I don’t need it,” Dahlquist said. “I’m going to give it to Bryan Stevenson,” she said, referring to the attorney who founded the Equal Justice Initiative, which fights for people who are wrongly convicted or committed crimes or are unjustly convicted.
“Except for $100,” she said. “No $150. I’ll bet on that.”
