Remind the office workers – Orange County Register
Geographically, economically, demographically, culturally, and ideologically, San Francisco and Shasta County are polar opposites, but their voters have one thing in common: a willingness to eliminate office workers. make them unhappy.
A few weeks ago, voters in Supervisor Leonard Moty’s Shasta county voted to recall the former Republican sheriff who has been accused of not seriously criticizing the state’s COVID-19 ordinances. state. The recall leaders were tied to the right-wing militia movement.
Last week, San Francisco voters reiterated three school board members accused of neglecting the education of their children because of their zealous promotion of progressive political goals, such as renaming schools to reflect current dogmatic ideology.
The power to summon office workers, enshrined in the state constitution for more than a century as a hedge against corruption but rarely used during that time, suddenly became fashionable during the COVID pandemic. -19 and rising crime rates increase cultural and political polarization.
By any reasonable standard, Shasta County’s Moty was a conservative Republican but violated the hardline right’s intolerance for anything other than full compliance with the requirements. caused Shasta to refuse to comply with the state’s pandemic directives.
Had it not been for the pandemic, the San Francisco school board’s preferred flight of thought would have been tolerated, but parents have grown angry about the slow reopening of schools and decided to by the merit-based admissions committee at the prestigious Lowell High School.
The school board’s recall was so widespread that prominent local politicians, including Mayor London Breed, endorsed it. The breed will name the successors to the deposed trio.
Although Governor Gavin Newsom rejected a weak attempt to recall him last year, most retrieval campaigns gathered enough signatures to make the vote a success, including Governor Gray’s. Davis in 2003 and sometimes the motives to overthrow state legislators.
We’re likely to see more recall elections soon, including one that already qualified with San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin to target. He was accused of forcefully refusing to prosecute criminal cases brought by the local police.
Similar charges are being thrown against Boudin’s predecessor, George Gascón, who is now a district attorney for Los Angeles County, and a petition to recall him is underway. Boudin, Gascón and several other green district attorneys have implemented policies of prosecution that are less punitive, but rising crime rates and growing public concern about crimes have generated a backlash. .
Following the Shasta County recall, there is another campaign underway in another rural county, Nevada, with similar dynamics.
The Sacramento Bee reported, “In Nevada County, a group of activists allege that officials have exceeded their authority when it comes to COVID-19 tracking, lockdown, and other public health measures. ‘violation of the right to freedom of religion and individual liberty.’ They are seeking to recall the five-member council for committing ‘crimes against humanity’. “
According to Bee, the recall proponents see county supervisors as “part of a corrupt system under Dr. Anthony Fauci that is forcing the masses to reject a dangerous and untried vaccine, to reject it.” treat patients with ivermectin and deprive them of their liberty by monitoring them. for contact tracking. “
Not surprisingly, the series of recall summons has generated proposals in the state Legislature to change the process, some to make it more difficult to qualify for recalls to vote, others others would effectively negate the revocation of a governor.
Perhaps the withdrawal is being overused or even abused at the moment, but it is still a valuable check for the arrogant office worker. Changing it can have negative and unintended consequences, so we shouldn’t be too eager to make radical reforms.
