Brian Lopes, a four-time mountain bike world champion, and several sixth graders at RF Hazard Elementary School in Santa Ana, were surprised.
On Tuesday, February 15, about two dozen students gathered in the school’s multipurpose room to assemble 50 bikes with Lopes.
The Strider balance bike, which started off without pedals to help young children learn to ride, along with 50 helmets were donated to the school by the All Kids Bike Preschool program, using money donated by Lopes.
The students worked in pairs as Lopes showed how to install the front wheels and handlebars.
“Bicycles have been a part of my life since I was 4 years old. It has given me so much,” said the Laguna Beach resident who grew up in Mission Viejo. He was invited to be the international ambassador for the show two years ago.
While the show may not be aiming to create as many mountain bike legends as Lopes, it is showing a younger generation “the freedom two wheels can give and help them get off the iPad and TV,” he said.

Teacher Jeanette Davert, who has taught at the school for 29 years, explains how she applied for a grant to give the school one of two bicycles in Southern California.
After all the bikes were assembled, they were covered with a multicolored parachute, and the kindergarten classes were led into a single brochure in the room for the big discovery session.
The children shouted with joy, then they put on their helmets and whirled around, following the teacher around the room like ducklings.
