AUHSD students helping out during the day of service were inspired by Father Martin Luther King Jr. – Orange County Registrar

Students across the Anaheim Union High School District turned their day off into a day of volunteering as they spent the day off Monday helping out during the national holiday that Father Martin Luther King Jr. inspired.

The district started the servathon several years ago with projects planned on campus and in the community.

The seniors and a few freshmen at Kennedy High spent the morning making a giant health poster for La Palma Intercommunal Hospital.

Alvaro Uribe, a senior and the president of the school’s medical club, said he and his classmates decided to make the movable mural for people visiting the hospital because it was “full of color”. color and happiness so it can give them something to look at.” are at the hospital. “

At Anaheim High, more than 40 students drew “rocks of compassion” that they would place around the community.

At Oxford Institute, around 130 students have worked on campus beautification projects, making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for a homeless group and collecting e-waste.

The school’s new succulent garden along Orange Avenue replaces plants that use more water and were not maintained during the COVID-19 closure.

Junior Anik Majumdar organized about 30 students to plant native cactus, lay rocks and spread mulch.

Behind the school, students have collected enough e-waste to fill a giant trash can. According to George Briggeman of Valley Vista Services, they piled up 2 tons of old electronics for recycling.

Some students were able to pick up some used electronics themselves, including a couple of iMacs and Xbox consoles.
