Two Chicago officers wounded in shootings “were ambushed,” police commissioner says
CHICAGO — Two Chicago police officers were injured in a shooting on the city’s west side early Friday and the suspected gunman was arrested nearby, authorities said.
The officers were shot in the department’s 11th Precinct and taken to a hospital, Chicago Police spokesman Tom Ahern said on Twitter. Her injuries were described by police as not life-threatening.
Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown told reporters that officers were “ambushed” by the gunman, who fled after the shooting but was quickly apprehended by other officers nearby.
According to police, officers were at a restaurant when one of them saw someone drop a gun. The suspect picked up the gun and “immediately opened fire,” the department said in the statement.
One officer was shot in the leg and the other had a laceration to the head, and both recovered, Brown said.
Officers did not fire any shots, Brown said, and a gun believed to have been used in the shooting was seized.
The investigation into the shooting is still in its early stages, Brown said, and more information would be released later.
