SANTA ANA – Mater Dei’s women’s basketball team showed that the playoff version of their signature, full-court press got even stronger and faster with its traps and rotations.
And in a tight game with Rosary to begin their consecutive CIF-SS Open Division title defense, the franchise acted as a big difference-maker for the Monarchs on Saturday night.
So did Shaena Brew’s biggest hit in his youth career.
The freshman guard sank an 18-foot long jumper ahead, with just 38 seconds remaining in the allotted time, and the Monarchs press forced a change of possession later on on the path to victory. won 49-44 in a Group A game at Mater Dei.

Fourth-seeded Monarchs (22-4) led 45-44 against fifth-seeded Rosary (15-8) on Brew’s basket, who freed himself with a fake pump near the 3-point line.
After a challenge on the sideline, the Royals decided to foul repeatedly to save time but Mater Dei added in a Soleil Montrose save with 13 seconds left and two late Lani White fouls to avenge the game. lost to Rosary on January 31.

Mater Dei also won an important game to open his title defense. Monarchs host Windward on Wednesday and can play at first-place and unbeaten Etiwanda (25-0) next Saturday for the Open final.
“You have to get this win to keep that CIF title alive,” said Mater Dei coach Kevin Kiernan. “For us, we want to protect it. We wanted to go three straight, and this was the only way we could do it. ”
White combined with Utah led Mater Dei by 20 points while Kaylee Byon of Utah Valley had 16 points for Rosary. Second, Allison Clarke added 13 points, 11 rebounds and four steals for the Royals, who played at Etiwanda on Wednesday.
Mater Dei sets the tone by its strong emphasis. The Monarchs took a 16-point lead midway through the second half and tied 10 away on the road to a 27-17 lead at halftime.
Rosary once again played her 1-1-3 zone and overcame Mater Dei 17-8 in the third round to tighten up the score in the fourth round. The Royals took a 44-43 lead after a 2:22 foul by freshman Mya Barnes but failed to score.
“This year’s team, their rotation and pressing and the intensity of the game is our thing,” Kiernan said.
Mater Dei takes Rosary up 1 to 8 shot from outside the arc and receives three steals each from Caia Elisaldez, Montrose and Hannah Vela.
“We went back and we didn’t let them take us,” said Rosary coach Richard Yoon, whose area hosts Monarchs to 7/30 shots from outside the arc. “It’s hard to beat Mater Dei twice, but our kids beat them. Our kids know we can play with them.”
