Firefighters honored in San Clemente during candlelight vigil – Orange County Register

The day begins and ends with a sky blazing with color – and as darkness falls, a bright white halo shines around the moon, peering down under the flickering candlelight in honor of the savior. Fire Jonathan Flagler of Los Angeles County.

“For a day like today, nothing is more fitting,” said Chaplin Vince Roldan of the Los Angeles County Fire Department, looking up at the sky.

A candlelit vigil drew hundreds in San Clemente to honor and remember Flagler, who died while fighting a house fire in Rancho Palos Verdes on January 6.

Flagler, 47, of San Clemente, was remembered by friends and firefighters as caring and courageous, a family man with a good sense of humor and fond of his two teenage sons. himself, Brody and Jack, and his wife Jenny Johnson Flagler.

“Every once in a while you come across someone who stands out,” said Fire Captain Dave Gillotte. “He was a wonderful human being who stood above the ordinary. He stands better better. And you know it when you meet him.”

Flagler was among crew members from Fire Station 83 who responded to the blaze around 2 a.m. Thursday at the 30700 block of Tarapaca Road.

Flagler weathered the smoke and fire while inside and issued a Mayday alert, Los Angeles County Interim Sheriff Anthony Marrone told reporters last week after the fire. He was taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where he died.

Fire investigators believe the fire was already in the attic when firefighters arrived, Marrone said.

A memorial flower grew last week at his station, number 83, in Rancho Palos Verdes.

Marrone on Monday night told a crowd of hundreds that filled the lawns of Ole Hanson Beach Club in San Clemente that firefighters from across the state and country were filled with enthusiasm, and called Flagler is “caring, selfless and brave”.

“He really embodies our core values of courage, care, and community, both on and off the job,” he said.

Brandon Hendriks, the family church pastor at Pacific Coast Church in San Clemente, began the night with a vigil, the waves crashing in the distance, a choir singing “Amazing Grace” to the crowd.

“We pray you will grant peace to all the wounded gathered here tonight,” he said.

Gillotte asks people to pause to acknowledge the dangers of being a firefighter.

“It was a sobering moment for all of us. Every fireman you see on the street… thank them,” he said. “We have another job when we are out of the house, when we go to work. Tonight we are reminded of that. ”

Roldan said the candlelight vigil was a fitting tribute to showing “the light and love that we all carry within us, to give that love to those who are hurting.”

“As a community, I know you are hurting right now. I look at this community and this family and me now everyone will be fine,” he said.

The union has also set up a memorial fund to benefit the family. Donations may be made to the Flagler Memorial Fund at F&A FCU, note: Aymee Yanesa, 2625 Corporate Place, Monterey Park, 91754.

Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
