‘Disappointed’ an ‘understatement’ when GM Dave Gettleman was fired – Orange County Register

Giants co-owner Steve Tisch broke his two-year silence with a powerful statement after GM Dave Gettleman was fired on Monday.

“It’s an understatement to say John [Mara] and I am disappointed by the lack of success we have had on the field,” said Tisch in a statement released by the team. “We are united in our commitment to find a general manager who will provide the direction we need to achieve the performance on the ground and the results we all have come to expect.”

The team tried to sell Gettleman’s departure as a retirement, but it resulted in a four-year layoff for negligence with a 19-46 record, .292 win rate.

Mara said in a statement that the Giants are currently “looking for someone who demonstrates exceptional leadership and communication skills, someone who will oversee all aspects of our football operations, including including player personnel, college scouts and coaching.”

The search for a new GM who oversees the coaching staff leaves head coach Joe Judge’s status unclear. Judge Monday was “business as usual,” according to Saquon Barkley, running away and meeting as usual with no sign of anything happening.

But Judge is not in the media. The players said he did not make any special statements that he was back. And Barkley couldn’t confirm Judge’s condition.

“Um, I really don’t know how to answer that,” he said, running back and shrugging.

“I’m not sure,” defensive midfielder Leonard Williams added, when asked if Judge would continue as his coach. “Today I heard nothing else to say. I love the guy, honestly. I like the way he approaches the game and I love playing for him. ”

The list of GM candidates to replace Gettleman should be extensive. Expected to include the likes of Monti Ossenfort (Titans), Kevin Abrams (Giants), Will McClay (Cowboys), Ed Dodds (Colts), Joe Schoen (Bills), Dave Ziegler (Patriots) and more likely are others.

It certainly needs to be more comprehensive than the December 2017 search that put Gettleman in the big chair. That year, the Giants only interviewed Gettleman, Abrams, VP of player evaluation Marc Ross, and former ESPN chief of staff/analyst Louis Riddick. Arguably, three out of four candidates are ‘in a family’.

Mara and Tisch fired head coach Ben McAdoo and two-time Super Bowl mid-season GM Jerry Reese after Eli Manning downed the seat Mara had signed.

Ownership wants Gettleman to run it back to Manning. GM did just that in 2018, and it backfired in a colossal fashion, burying the franchise in the unusual and irrelevant.

Years of bad drafting, poor free agency contracts, and bad contracts have led the Giants (22-59) to be tied by the Jets to the worst record in the NFL over the past five seasons.

Gettleman’s only remaining hope of setting up the Giants favorably in some way for the future lies in Daniel Jones’ health and ability to take the next step of becoming a franchise quarterback. . Gettleman picked Jones No. 6 overall in 2019.

But Jones is sidelined with a neck injury as he enters the fourth year of his rookie contract with lingering questions about whether the Giants should opt for a fifth-year option for him in 2023 this spring. or not.

Despite Gettleman’s “disappointing” tenure – in his words, in a statement released Monday – the outgoing GM has been allowed to have family and friends on the sidelines of MetLife Stadium for pictures. before the game on Sunday.

That ceremony was in stark contrast to Reese’s mid-season shooting on the bleak morning of December 4, 2017, following a disastrous loss to the Oakland Raiders to Geno Smith starting at QB.

The Giants remain in the fog to this day.
