ANAHEIM – Canyon may be getting ready for the CIF men’s basketball knockout.
Comanches overcame Servite 71-29 on Friday in the first game of the CIF Southern Section Division 2AA at Canyon High.
Second seed Canyon (24-4) will play the winner of Saturday’s ML King-Shadow Hills game in the second round on Tuesday. If King wins, Canyon plays at King; If Shadow Hills wins, Canyon is the home team.

Servite finished the season in 12-12 place. The brothers were 0-10 down in the always tough Trinity League, having all six of its teams qualify for the knockout stages, but were down 12-1 in disease-free games. Servite reached the quarterfinals of CIF-SS in Division 2A last season.
Canyon 6-3 rookie Brandon Benjamin continues to impress. He made 11/12 shots with 25 points, almost scoring as many as Servite. Benjamin, who averaged 18 points in the game, missed 3 pointers while his 11 shots were all within 3 feet of the basket.
“He might not just be the best freshman in Orange County,” said Canyon coach Nate Harrison, “he could be the best player in Orange County. He’s not flashy, but he’s the best player on the floor every day. ”
Young keeper Tyler Small overtook Servite by nine points.
Benjamin made two power moves for early near-shore shots to give Canyon a 4-2 lead to start a 12-0 tie that led to an 18-9 lead late in the first half. During the quarter, Servite finished 4th out of 11 from the field with six returns.
Canyon overtook Servite 14-5 in the second quarter and 28-9 in the third quarter to a 60-23 lead in the fourth quarter.
Canyon, second-placed Joshua Goodall, 3 points early in the fourth round took a 65-25 lead for the 40 points needed to run the clock for the rest of the round.
Canyon ranks 10th in the top 25. Servite ranks 21st.
Harrison, who coached Canyon to three CIF-SS championships, was mistaken that Servite was a Comanches first-round opponent.
Harrison said: “We felt the draw was not great when we received Trinity as the second seed.
But Harrison is confident that Canyon will play well enough and with spirit, to defeat the Servite
“I knew if we played hard, we would win,” Harrison said. “I am proud of the kids. They did a great job.”
