Marina leaned on defense Friday to win a 49-41 home win over Trabuco Hills in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 2AA men’s basketball knockout round.
Vikings, number 14 in Orange County top 25, holds the Mustangs to five points in the first quarter and four points in the third quarter.
Eric Hodgkins made two 3-pointers for Marina (19-4) and Bohdi Armstrong made a 3-to provide clutch baskets in the fourth inning.
Marina takes on Foothill’s 11th place in the second round of 2AA on Tuesday.
In the Open Division:
Harvard-Westlake 67, Mater Dei 45: The visiting Monarchs (25-3) team lost to the Wolverines (22-2) in their first pool game at Pool B. Mater Dei played at the Sierra Canyon in their second pool game on Tuesday.
In Division 1:
Fairmont Prep 76, Murrieta Valley 49: Chol Deng scored 25 points, Myles Che scored 18 points and the Huskies (17-6) won at home. Fairmont Prep competes at St. John Bosco in the second round on Tuesday.
JSerra 63, Oak Park 44: Dane Persek’s 19 points overcame the away Lions (16-9).
In the 2AA Division:
Foothill 64, Palm Springs 41: Jacob Horton scored 17 points and Cruz Billings scored 10 with 11 assists for the home side Knights (26-2).
Mira Costa 78, Aliso Niguel 57: Tyler Weaver had another productive night for the Wolverines (20-8), scoring 24 points, but they were knocked out by the visiting Mustangs (18-6).

Tustin 43, Desert Palm 33: Tillers (21-8) have held the opponent to 40 points or less for the 10th time this season. Eli Nyeazi scored 11 points and seven rebounds for Tustin. Wasi Khan added 10 points and 5 assists for the Tillers.
In Division 4AA:
Garden Grove 50, Golden Valley 49: Host Argonauts (18-8) won close when Miguel Ortega scored 14 points and Gabe Garcia added 10.
In Division 5AA:
Estancia 72, Career and Discovery Academy 31: James De La O scored 16 points and Reef Johnson added 15 points for the away Eagles (18-11).
