Vikings asked to interview Jonathan Gannon of the Eagles

Denver Broncos are the first team to bring in request an interview with Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon for their vacant head coach job and now another team is interested in calling the team’s defensive playstyle.

Vikings fired head coach Mike Zimmer after the end of the 8-9 season.

Gannon, 39, now has two teams interested in him, as he prepares for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Sunday in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.

“I can confirm that,” Gannon said this week. “But my sole focus is Tampa Bay.”

Eagles defensive coordinator joins Philadelphia after coaching Indianapolis Colts defensive back for three years and in Minnesota as assistant defensive back coach from 2014-17 on the Zimmer staff .

Philadelphia’s defense has improved under Gannon, ranking 10th (22.6) in points per game after finishing 20th (26.1) last season. Gannon has helped the Eagles place 10th in total yards per game (328.8), including 9th best for runs (107.9) and 11th best for passes (220.9) in 2021.

Gannon first entered the league in 2007 as a defensive quality control coach with the Atlanta Falcons. He held the same title as the Tennessee Titans (2012-13). From there, he became the defensive lineback coach for Minnesota for three seasons and another three years for the Colts before landing in Philadelphia as a coordinator.

His next step could be to become a head coach.
