Two people die from floods in Peru as damage in Tonga remains unclear

Two people have drowned in Peru after high waves from an undersea volcanic eruption off the coast of Tonga hit the Peruvian coast on Sunday, Reuters report.

The San Francisco Bay Area also suffered some damage from flooding, according to reports local ABC branch.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said on Sunday that a tsunami that hit Tonga had “significantly impacted the coast to the north of the country”. [Tongan capital city] Nuku’alofa, with boats and large rocks ashore, ” New York Times report.

Based on BBC, some locals trying to get the message across to the outside world saying that Tonga looked “like a moonscape”, was covered in a thick layer of ash.

The New Zealand government has pledged the equivalent of about $340,000 to help with the recovery with promises to continue to do more. According to the BBC, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said ensuring a clean water supply was a priority, with floods of ash and salt water likely to contaminate much of Tonga’s supply.

A tsunami hit Tonga Saturday after an undersea volcano erupted 40 miles south of the capital city. Tongan King Tupou VI was evacuated from his palace by sea.

The volcano, called Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai, sent smoke and ash into the sky more than 12 kilometers and created a shock wave as far away as New Zealand.

Tonga has a population of just over 100,000, of which 70% live on the main island of Tongatapu.
