Tsunami hits Tonga after undersea volcanic eruption

The Polynesian island nation of Tonga was hit by a tsunami on Saturday after an undersea volcano erupted 40 miles south of the capital city on the main island of Tongatapu. report.

The volcano, known as Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai, shoot Smoke and ash flew more than 12 miles into the sky and created a shockwave as far away as New Zealand.

No injuries or deaths have yet to be reported, but video shows large waves crashing against the shore and swirl around the car and houses like ash dim the sun and people fled to higher ground. Tonga has a population of just over 100,000, of which 70% live on the main island.
