Schoen has held on to his current role for the past five seasons, working closely with GM Brandon Beane. Before coming to Buffalo, he climbed the ladder in the Miami Dolphins’ scouting department, spending three of his final eight seasons in that organization as director of player personnel. He also spent a lot of time in the scouting department of the Carolina Panthers.

Schoen grew up a few hours outside of Chicago in Elkhart, Ind., where he attended Memorial High School. He went on to play Division III football at DePauw University, where he was the receiver of all conferences.

What was said

“He’s going to be the GM,” Bean told The Athletic in 2019. “The thing about him is that he’s smart enough to know that he’s still learning and growing, and that he’s trying to become stronger in his profession. … Instead of just rushing to the seat and then trying to figure it out, Joe is the guy who wants all the answers to the test before he goes and sits down. Very few people are like that. There are a lot of people in this business just trying to get in that head coach, that GM chair, and maybe they’re just not ready for it. I’m sure he’ll be ready for that. He is a great communicator. He understands everyone. You won’t be able to work with him. ”
