ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colorado (CBS4) – An investigation is underway after an Arapahoe County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man. This suspect was found with a stolen vehicle.

“My son is over there on the floor with a sheet over him,” Jeanine McGhee told CBS4.

It’s unclear what brought the sheriff’s deputies to the Ivy Crossing Apartment Complex Thursday morning, but when they arrived they found a stolen vehicle in the parking lot.

“This vehicle was also occupied by one person and they called for cover cars,” Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office spokesman John Bartmann said at a news conference.

Bartmann says MPs tried to order the man out of the vehicle but he didn’t comply.

“Then at some point he drove his vehicle back to the MPs. It was a very small area, police officers were by the vehicle trying to get the suspect out of the vehicle. At one point, shots were fired and the suspect was hit,” he said.

When asked by reporters how many shots were fired, Bartmann said one deputy fired a fatal shot.

He says they found a gun on the suspect but didn’t know if he ever pointed it at MPs and didn’t know when they found out he had it.

“The MPs involved are currently on administrative leave and at this stage that is all the information we have,” he said.

During this update, the man’s mother, Jeanine McGhee, and other family members could be heard questioning these details. A man who lives in the complex was heard telling them a different story.

“They said ‘Hey Freeze’ and ‘Bam Bam.’ It was seconds after that,” he said.

This account left her with questions about grief.

“You know he had his flaws, which we all have … but he was a great man and he loved his family,” she said.

The one MP who fired shots and two others are on administrative leave, which is usual when investigating a fatal shooting.
