Saints ‘Brendan Nugent emerges as pioneer for Chargers CV position’ – Orange County Register
The Chargers have identified a top candidate to fill the position of coaching their offensive team.
Brendan Nugent has emerged as the striker to replace Frank Smith as forward coach for the Chargers, a source informed Southern California News Group on Monday. Nugent is the New Orleans Saints offensive team coach in 2021.
Smith, who spent one season as the Chargers’ offensive line coach and game executive coordinator, has been hired as the Miami Dolphins’ offensive line coordinator, a source confirmed today. Monday.
Nugent has been involved with the Saints since 2015 and also supports tight endings and running games. Nugent worked with Chargers offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi for five seasons when Lombardi was quarterback coach at New Orleans.
Smith has managed to turn the struggling Chargers attack line into an effective unit in the space of a year. He was instrumental in developing rookie Rashawn Slater’s left hand and quickly found the right fit for a starting group with four new players to open Week 1 of the 2021 season.
Slater and center Corey Linsley were named starters in the Pro Bowl under Smith’s guidance. But the Chargers were unsuitable on the right side of attack because of lingering injuries to right Bryan Bulaga and right guard Oday Aboushi.
Now, the Chargers, and possibly Nugent, are tasked with forming a formidable right wing to protect midfielder Justin Herbert and build on the overall success of the attack line into 2021.
