Review of Jets .’s full 2020 draft

As Jets general manager Joe Douglas got ready for his third draft in charge of the Jets, his first two drafts went different ways.

The 2021 rookie class shows a lot of promise this year, and it looks like Douglas has found some foundational pieces for the Jet. Defender Zach Wilson’s progress will ultimately determine how that draft is viewed, but early returns are positive.

The 2020 draft was also unsuccessful. The jet was produced very little from Douglas’ first draft class, which consisted of nine players. The Jets are preaching patience, but there’s reason to worry about this class.

“I will talk about the entire draft class, we are in 2nd year of their professional career and I would say at this checkpoint in their race, probably not the place it needs to be with as a group,” Douglas said. “But, at this point, no one has given up on these players. Look, every player develops differently, at different rates. I’m sure if you ask some of them they’ll say they’re disappointed with their season, but at the end of the day, no one gives up on the players. Coach [Robert Salleh] certainly not give up the boys. We fully expect them to be back in the season ready to roll and ready to improve. ”

Here’s a closer look at how each option performs in 2021 and what their 2022 outlook is:

Round 1: OT Mekhi Becton (final No. 11)

Becton played just 48 times in his season opener against the Panthers before dislocating his right knee. The injury required surgery and the Jets said they expected Becton to be back in four to six weeks. He did not play another down. There were problems with Becton in training camp when the coaches weren’t happy with him. Becton has battled his weight issues like a pro and the Jets clearly hope he matures and learns to be a pro this season. Becton showed All-Pro potential as a rookie, but he must learn to control his weight and stay on the field if he is to realize that potential.

“I think he’s going to attack this season and get back in the best possible shape he can,” Douglas said. “I expect big things from him next year. We all want Mekhi back.”

Round 2: WR Denzel Mims (59)

Mims wants to forget her second season with the Jets. A wave of food poisoning in the spring cost him time at OTAs, and the coaches and Wilson never seemed to trust him. Mims played 11 games and only caught eight 133-yard passes. He has no catch in the last four games. He also commits a lot of mental fouls from penalties to running behind the end of the field for a possible touchdown. Mims has yet to score in her NFL career. This feels like it’s heading towards a divorce. The Jets will likely buy Mims around the NFL draft, but it’s hard to see them getting much of a profit for him.

Round 3: S Ashtyn Davis (68)

Davis missed the first three games of the season while recovering from a 2020 leg injury. He played in 13 games, starting with 10. Davis had two interceptions and three saves. Davis shows instinct and poor tackle ability. It’s hard to see the Jets count on him starting in 2022. This is one of the picks they got from the Giants in the Leonard Williams deal.

Round 3: DE Jabari Zuniga (79)

Zuniga spent most of the season training with the team. He played in three games and got the first sacking of his career. This looks like a big miss.

Round 4: RB La’Mical Perine (120)

Perine seems to be a victim of the change of coach. He was a better fit in Adam Gase’s offense but never found a role as Mike LaFleur. He’s only played four games and has only made eight. It is said that even with the Jets suffering a positional injury, the coaching staff turned to someone else.

Round 4: QB James Morgan (125)

This is a wasteful option. Morgan was cut in training camp and returned briefly when the team had COVID problems in quarterback, but he is yet to play a game in the NFL.

Round 4: CV Cameron Clark (129)

Clark suffered a season-end neck injury in training camp that could end his career.

Round 5: CB Bryce Hall (158)

The best pick in this class, Hall started 17 games and is one of the Jets’ most consistent players. He’s proven he can be an NFL starting cornerback. A steal for Douglas in the fifth round.

Round 6: P Braden Mann (191)

Mann was inconsistent. A left knee injury has cost him seven games this season. He ended the year with an average of 45.7 yards for his pitches.
