La Habra City Council appoints Daren Nigsarian to its ranks – Orange County Register

La Habra City Council members appointed Daren Nigsarian to fill the fifth vacant seat left in the sky in December with Tim Shaw’s resignation.

Nigsarian’s appointment will run until the November election, when voters will decide who holds the seat for the rest of its term until 2024. Nigsarian said he plans to run for office in November.

Shaw resigned after being challenged for holding a board seat at the same time as a seat on the Orange County Board of Education. Nigsarian most recently served on the Planning Committee, but has been involved in city affairs for many years, having previously served on the financial review committee and chaired an advocacy committee. 2005 legislation to extend the tax period of utility users as a source of revenue.

Nigsarian has twice unsuccessfully run for council.

He has also been on the board of directors of La Habra Men’s & Women’s Club for a decade, was recently its president, is a member of the La Habra Lion Host Club and has served a time on the committee for the local school district.

“I humbly say my experience is very broad and very deep,” he told panel members during his interview for the appointment. There are five applicants under consideration. “When you look at my overall experience, I think it offers real value.”

He identified the ongoing need to settle the city’s outstanding pension liabilities as a priority he believes councils need to keep in mind, as well as encouraging quality businesses to come to the city and promote local control over development, especially new housing, so quality-of-life issues like traffic and parking are addressed before new projects flood in.

The state is asking the city to plan for 800 new housing units over the next eight years.
