Great Wave Advisory Issued to Southern California – Orange County Registry

The National Weather Service has issued high surf advice, warning of big waves along the Southern California coast starting Tuesday, January 11.

The advisor warns of waves in the 5- to 8-foot range at Los Angeles and Orange County beaches, increasing the risk of currents and other coastal hazards. The advice goes into effect at 3pm on Tuesday and lasts until 9pm on Wednesday, although surfing will still be strong over the weekend.

With the weather warming on Tuesday – expected to be around 70 degrees at the coast and close to 80 degrees inland – beachgoers should take extra care at the coast if heading to the beach to cool off.

NWS meteorologist Philip Gonsalvef said: “My advice to casual beachgoers is to stay away from the surf. “If you’re just going to the beach to enjoy the nice weather, you’ll want to stay away from the surf.”

The weather agency is warning of a higher risk of drowning with surf, as well as fast currents that can drag swimmers out into the sea. Large breaking waves can also cause injury, washing people off beaches and rocks, and capsizing small boats.

In addition to high surf advice, the NWS also issues a warning about dangers at sea for boaters.

High tide occurs in the morning, but is not extreme, so flooding in low-lying areas is unlikely, Gonsalvef said.

“Some areas may experience some minor flooding, but that will be a combination of tides and waves,” he said. “The possibility of flooding is still quite small.”

Winds in Santa Ana will linger on Tuesday, but look likely to weaken in Orange County Wednesday, which should bring temperatures down. It will be even cooler on Thursday and through the weekend.

Winds will be strongest in the mountains of Los Angeles County, with wind warnings in place through Tuesday. Northeast to east winds are expected to reach 20 mph to 35 mph with gusts expected from 40 mph to 50 mph.
