Former greats among Dodgers’ recent minor league registrants – Orange County Register
Even with the 40-man roster frozen, the Dodgers are still trying to add talent.
Among the players who have signed to the minor leagues recently are former angel prospect Cole Duensing, Japanese league skater Stefen Romero, right winger Sam Gaviglio and catcher Chris Betts .
Because minor athletes are not members of the MLB Players Association, they are not affected by the back-lock. The minor leagues spring training session is scheduled to open March 3 in Arizona and Florida.
Of the four recent signings, Romero and Gaviglio have the best chance of making an impact on the Dodgers’ 2022 season.
Romero, 33, was a highly regarded prospect in the Seattle Mariners’ system and was their Minor League Player of the Year in 2012 but scored just 0.195 with four home runs in more than 94 games in major league level from 2014 to 2016. Debuted by the Mariners after the 2016 season, Romero signed with the Orix Buffaloes and hit 96 home runs in 5 seasons in Japan with 0.828 OPS.
As a midfielder and first Mariners, the right-handed hitter for Romero was primarily a DH player in Japan. MLB is expected to switch to a common DH rule in 2022, opening the bats in position to the Dodgers.
Gaviglio, meanwhile, also has major tournament experience, having made 98 appearances (mostly as a rescue) with the Toronto Blue Jays, Kansas City Royals and Mariners between 2017 and 2020. The 31-year-old right winger has a career ERA of 4.88 with 243 strikes in 296-2/3 innings. He played in the most recent major tournaments with the Blue Jays in 2020 and spent most of his playing time last season in South Korea.
Donsing, 23, was the Angels’ sixth pick in the 2016 draft but didn’t break out of Class A before the Angels released him last summer. He ended the pitching season for the independent Kansas City Monarchs.
Last month on his Twitter account, Duensing promoted a job by posting a video of what he said were the new throws (sliders and cutters) he added this winter – complete. adjusted with Rapsodo data that measures the motion and velocity of the pitch.
Betts, 24, was a Tampa Bay Rays second-round pick out of Long Beach Wilson High in 2015 but hit Double-A in 23 games last season before becoming a free agent this winter. In 2020, when the pandemic canceled the mini-seasons, Betts organized training sessions in Irvine for uninvited players to alternative training locations.
Betts – as he pointed out on Instagram when announcing his signing with the Dodgers – is unrelated to the Dodgers’ current quarterback Mookie Betts.
