Marina finished October 20. The Vikings, who are Wave League co-champions with Fountain Valley, have a 23-point lead over senior Kenji Duremdes.
The Vikings lead the Knights 30-26 after halftime. Carlo Billings scored eight points in the third quarter, including two from three, as Foothill took eight of 12 shots in the quarter to overtake Marina 22-13 and lead 48-43 in the fourth inning.
Many of the Knights made big hits in the final quarter. Mikey Mazurie grabbed the defensive bounce and headed to the shore to make a backup. He was fouled during the game and took the free throw. Jacob Horton made two 3s in the quarter and Carlo Billings made one.
Mazurie finished with 13 points and Horton scored 10 for the Knights. Carlo Billings has the highest seven rebounds on the team.
Foothill coach Yousof Etemadi said the Knights played with confidence, no matter the situation.
“They’ve played in close matches, we’ve had a long season and they know how to win,” Etemadi said.
It was a fast-paced matchup between two teams that relied on their defenders. They commit crimes on a regular basis.
“We work hard in the practice,” says Cruz Billings, “we run those plays, we run those sets so we know what options are available. When they show themselves, we look for ways to get open shots. ”
Foothill led 15-8 at the end of the first half. Marina shot poorly in the first quarter in her gym, taking only 4 of 18 shots.
The Vikings turned hot in the second quarter, when they overcame Foothill 22-11. Duremdes scored seven points in the quarter. Marina’s Robert Aguirre scored five times in the quarter, including a deep sinker, and Kylle Magdangal also scored five in that span.
A win in the quarterfinals would guarantee the Knights at least two more games. CIF-SS semifinalists in Divisions 1 through 5A qualify for the CIF Southern California Region.
Foothill advanced to two games for the CIF-SS men’s basketball championship. The Knights have won both games, most recently in 2015.
