Eagles DC arrives to Interview for Denver Head Coach Job

With success comes the possibility of change.

The Eagles have very low expectations going into the new year, with a 4-11-1 season. They’re making their way to the knockouts, though, and now one of the teams that didn’t make the playoffs, the Denver Broncos, wants to speak to Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Gannon, 39, came to Philadelphia after working as a fullback coach in Indianapolis, and has been an NFL assistant for 15 seasons.

Denver’s general manager, George Paton, is from Minnesoata, where he knows Gannon, the duo worked together during their time with the Vikings from 2014-17.

It’s been a season of ups and downs for Gannon, who has ceded historically poor completion rates to the likes of Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady, Dak Prescott and Derek Carr, but has settled as the schedule has increased.

Gannon helped make his name known by the end of the season, especially after scoring 16.5 points per game between Weeks 8 and 17.

Although this is Gannon’s first year as a defensive coordinator, some are interested in a coach whose defensive ability ranks 10th in allowable yards and yards per game in this season.

Gannon has never worked as a head coach at any level, but he certainly has his sights set on becoming a head coach one day.

“I think he’s going to be fantastic, for the same reasons that I hired him as defensive coordinator as well as the same reasons I think he would be a really good head coach,” the coach said. Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni said when asked about the possibility a few weeks ago.

“When people on your staff and people in the building get opportunities like that or are mentioned like that, it means you’re doing some good.”

Meanwhile, there are Eagles fans who would like to see Gannon fired and replaced with someone like former Denver head coach Vic Fangio or maybe even former Minnesota head coach Mike Zimmer .

Still, it’s clear that Gannon is a respected defensive man in NFL circles, and his interview in Denver may have been the first of many in this coaching cycle.

Having your assistants interviewed for the job of head coach is a byproduct of winning and having unexpected success.
