Dolphins land Darrell Bevell to train QBs, coordinate passing – Orange County Register

The Miami Dolphins are reportedly turning to a veteran NFL assistant to coordinate the game and coach the team’s quarterbacks.

Based on NFL Network on Wednesday morning, Darrell Bevell, who last served as offensive coordinator and interim head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, agreed to terms to serve as the team’s new passing coordinator and quarterback coach. Coach Mike McDaniel. ‘s Tuesday Night Report ESPN first linked Bevell to Miami, stating that the Dolphins were “working on adding” Bevell.

Bevell’s career began as an assault assistant in Green Bay, where he coached Brett Favre in the west coast assault McDaniel intended to install.

From there, he was the Minnesota offensive coordinator from 2006-2010, where he again coached Favre. He then served as the Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator from 2011-17, the Detroit Lions offensive coordinator for 2019-2020 before ending the season as interim head coach of the Lions as Matt Patricia fired.

And last season, he was the coordinator for Urban Meyer’s Jaguars team before taking over as interim coach when Meyer was fired.

During his two terms as interim coach, Bevell was 2-7, but he has coached Favre, Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, Matt Stafford and Trevor Lawrence, and hopefully he has could take defender Tua Tagovailoa’s game to the next level if hired in Miami.

The Dolphins have hired former Los Angeles Chargers assistant Frank Smith to serve as offensive coordinator, and he will likely be in charge of directing the running game. Smith coached the offensive line-up for most of his career, and was the Chargers’ running game coordinator.

Bevell, who played quarterback at Wisconsin under Barry Alvarez in the early 1990s, will likely focus on the passing game. Former NFL receiver Wes Welker was hired to coach the receivers, and Miami retained Eric Studesville to coach the defenders.

Considering that he was instrumental in the selection of Wilson in Seattle, and his early development, it is possible that his concepts of rapid speed, which were fundamental in the attack on the west coast west, can help Tagovailoa become more effective.

However, Lawrence struggled for most of his rookie season, where he led the Jaguars to a 3-14 record as the team’s starter.

Lawrence completed 59% of his passes, hurling 3,641 yards with 12 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. Lawrence finished the season with a passing rating of 71.9, making him the 32nd-ranked quarterback in the NFL, one place ahead of New York Jets rookie Zach Wilson (69.7).

McDaniel has hired or retained most of his coaching staff, but with Tuesday night hire defenders outside of coach Tyrone McKenziehe can be a defensive coach after completing his first staff.
