Dolphins almost have full coaching staff with hiring outside defenders coach – Orange County Register

The Miami Dolphins are one step closer to a full coaching staff under new coach Mike McDaniel.

The Dolphins have hired Tyrone McKenzie as their new outfield defender team coach, a federation source confirmed to the South Florida Sun Sentinel on Tuesday night.

McKenzie replaced Rob Leonard in that role with the Dolphins after Leonard took the same job with the Baltimore Raven. McKenzie hired is first reported by NFL Network.

With Dolphins also hires Darrell Bevell as quarterback coach and passing coordinatorAccording to multiple reports, if all the reported hires come to fruition, Miami is now left with only one coach with a full coaching staff.

That job would go to a defensive back coach after Gerald Alexander was sacked by McDaniel last week. Coaching recruitment under McDaniel has yet to be officially announced by the Dolphins.

McKenzie is a former quarterback who was a University of South Florida third-rounder by the New England Patriots in 2009. He’s also been on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Minnesota Vikings. Outside of the 2012 Minnesota season, he’s spent most of his playing career on practice teams; That year, he made 12 tackles on special teams.

McKenzie joined the coaching ranks as an assistant special team coach with the Los Angeles Rams in 2017. He was the Tennessee Titans’ inside coach in 2018 and 2019, the midfield coach with Detroit Lions in 2020 and spend the 2021 season with the Indianapolis Colts.

On the defensive side of the coaching staff, McDaniel has retained defensive coordinator Josh Boyer, defense coach Austin Clark, defender coach Anthony Campanile and fullback coach Charles Burks. Only the role of full-back remained vacant by Alexander.

Hiring Bevell will complete the Dolphins’ offensive training team. Miami will also have assistant coaches below the main coaching staff.
