Coachella 2022 lineup: 5 biggest lessons learned

Product line for the 2022 edition of Coachella Valley music and arts festival finally arrived late Wednesday, although its title – Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, Billie Eilish, and Harry Styles – had leaked days and hours earlier.

And perhaps more than in any pre-pandemic year, it’s a difficult lineup to judge.

There are a large number of returnees from the 2020 lineup that aren’t 21 Savage, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Hot Chip among them, despite that year’s standouts – Rage Against the Machine, Travis Scott and Frank Ocean – are absent.

And while 2019, the last Coachella we have, has a diverse and cosmopolitan mix – BLACKPINK from Korea, J Balvin from Colombia, Burna Boy from Nigeria —Coachella has continued to go global, with Asian artists being particularly well represented.

1. Pop rock: Billie Eilish is fun pop music. Harry Styles is pop rock music. And Carly Rae Jepsen, she’s my queen. Traditional pop means softer things, songs and artists that have sold a lot of records. But here we are going to claim that it is simply music with irresistible melodies, cleverly crafted and aimed straight at the heart of the listener.

Some of them are remarkable: if you have seen one Harry Styles tells you how much he loves ’70s rock, and Phoebe Bridgers perform more singer-songwriters than lower-volume rock.

Some are introspective: Japanese breakfast writes great songs that create a strong emotional connection. Others, like Doja Cat, have a much higher position in the current lineup than in 2020, coming from the hip-hop side.

If it’s a song you want to sing and it touches your heart, it doesn’t matter how much it sells, we call it pop.

2. Effect 88 occurs: Like in 2020, music company 88using gets a special bill on its 2022 Coachella lineup poster, with the tagline at the bottom pledging Head In The Clouds Forever, a salutation to its festival. for which 88 Asian-American artists and Americans in general are champions.

Scattered in the lineup are the names that have just played The 3rd Head In The Clouds Festival in Pasadena a few months ago: Niki, Rich Brian, Joji, Beabadoobee and Japanese Breakfast among them.

But the diversity of the lineup goes beyond a company and a festival. Japan’s Kyary Pamyu Pamyu is back from the 2020 roster and Mongolia’s heavy metal Hu is also back.

3. Stone or cobblestone: If a time traveler from Coachella 2005 were to appear in this lineup, they wouldn’t know what to do with the rock bands on the posters, or without them. This is not a new trend so far, but with Rage against machines goes out of focus it feels more obvious this year.

However, you still have some good options. The British-Irish band Idles is a great post punk band. British electronic rock band Spiritualized will transport you to some distant fanciful cloud. Australia’s King Gizzard and Lizard Wizard traffic in a hallucinatory state. I’m looking forward to Måneskin, the Italian hard rockers who won the most recent Eurovision Song Contest.

4. Rap ​​still rules: With the former Kanye West is in the spotlight again this year, rap has a prestigious place in the lineup. But the bottom card is also solid: 21 Savage, Megan Thee Stallion, Run The Jewels, Brockhampton and Lil Baby are guaranteed to draw huge crowds.

5. Fresh faces and weirdos: Every Coachella has a good portion of the action that you really want to capture. They can be rising stars like Yola or Caroline Polachek or older statesmen like Fatboy Slim and Richie Hawtin.

Others may not fit any mold: Danny Elfman was both a renowned film composer and frontman for the beloved and defunct Oingo Boingo band.. What he does at Coachella will pull one of the broadest ages of any set.
