The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has issued his decree on Will Smith’s behavior at the Oscars late last month: A 10-year ban from attending Academy events, including of course the Oscars themselves.

Smith has been in the Academy crosshairs since March 27, when he took the stage at the Dolby Theater and punched comedian Chris Rock after Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. (You may have heard about it.) Though Smith ultimately stayed at the theater that night — and delivered an emotionally charged speech while picking up his Best Actor Oscar King Richard– In the days that followed, the Academy issued statements that they would take disciplinary action against him.

(There was too a whole back and forth about whether it was him asked leaving the ceremony or refusing to leave the ceremony, etc., to which we will probably never get a 100% reliable answer.)

Smith responded to news of his impending criticism by apologizing, and his resignation, to the Academy (as well as an apology to Rock and his fellow event attendees). In accepting the resignation, Academy President Dave Rubin made it clear that the organization would still hold its disciplinary hearing — and actually expedited the process by moving it to today instead of a few weeks as previously announced.

The big question on the table, of course, was whether Smith would keep his Oscar — his first, having been nominated for best actor in 2002 and 2007. The Academy apparently decided to shy away from it that hypocrisy accusation bait bag full of worms and instituted this 10-year ban instead. (Including the apparent commitment to preventing Smith from fulfilling the traditional role of best actor winner of handing out the best actress award at next year’s event.) The ruling doesn’t appear to prevent Smith from doing so to win another Oscar, mind you, but he has to send an agent to collect it for him in this case.

Shortly after the academy announced its verdict, Smith issued a brief statement: “I accept and respect the Academy’s decision.”

Here is the Academy’s full statement:

The 94th Academy Awards should be a celebration of the many individuals in our community who have done incredible work over the past year. However, those moments were overshadowed by the unacceptable and harmful behavior we saw Mr. Smith exhibit on stage.

During our broadcast we did not adequately address the situation in the room. We’re sorry. This was an opportunity for us to set an example for our guests, viewers and our Academy family around the world, and we failed – unprepared for the unprecedented.

Today the Board of Governors called a meeting to discuss how best to respond to Will Smith’s behavior at the Oscars and accept his resignation. The Board has determined that for a period of 10 years beginning April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not participate, in person or virtually, in any Academy events or programs, including but not limited to the Academy Awards.

We would like to express our deep gratitude to Mr Rock for maintaining his composure in exceptional circumstances. We also want to thank our hosts, nominees, presenters and winners for their composure and grace throughout our broadcast.

This action, which we are taking today in response to Will Smith’s conduct, is a step toward a larger goal, which is to protect the safety of our performers and guests, and restore trust in the Academy. We also hope that this can begin a time of healing and recovery for all involved and affected.
