Who will be on the balcony of Buckingham Palace for King Charles’ coronation?

The coronation of King Charles will take place on the weekend of May 6-8, 2023.

Following the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, it will be the king’s first appearance as monarch on the balcony.

His wife Camilla, the Queen Consort, will be by his side on this special day.

It is not yet known who will be invited to the coronation, but it can be assumed that Prince William and Princess Kate will be present.

Who started the tradition?

The famous balcony was not an original part of Buckingham Palace but was added during the 1845 renovations at the suggestion of Prince Albert.

Queen Victoria watched the troops leave for the Crimean War and hailed their return from the balcony.

The balcony was only officially used in 1851 for the opening ceremony of the World Exhibition.

Queen Victoria was the first monarch to step out onto the balcony to greet her subjects.

Seven years later, during her daughter Princess Victoria’s wedding, she introduced her family to the balcony to greet the crowd.

From then on, the balcony became a royal symbol used for special occasions.
