Who is Peter Murrell? Nicola Sturgeon’s husband and former SNP chief

PETER Murrell is the husband of former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

But he was also a leading figure in the SNP himself.

And before he resigned earlier this year, he had been an integral part of the party for more than 20 years.

How old is Peter Murrell?

Murrell was born in Edinburgh in 1964 and attended Craigmount High School in the city before attending the University of Glasgow. He is now 58 years old.

He worked his way through the ranks of politics, once working for the Banff and Buchan area office of Alex Salmond, former party leader and predecessor of Sturgeon.

Eventually, in 1999, he replaced Michael Russell as Chief Executive of SNP.

During his tenure, the party grew in prominence and he was partially credited with winning the 2007 election.

When did he meet Nicola Sturgeon?

Peter Murrell married his longtime partner Nicola Sturgeon at Oran Mor in Glasgow in the summer of 2010.

He headed the SNP for more than a decade, while she was Salmond’s Deputy First Minister at the time.

The couple had met at an SNP youth weekend in 1988, but didn’t officially become a couple in 2003.

They had no children and Sturgeon recently said she believes she would have been taken less seriously as a politician if she had had children.

She also previously spoke about suffering a miscarriage at the age of 40 just before the 2011 Scottish General Election campaign.

Why did he resign as CEO?

Due to allegations of lies and election fraud in the leadership competition, he had to resign dramatically as SNP boss.

After Sturgeon resigned, the race to find her replacement began.

The public and the press asked the SNP to disclose its membership numbers.

The party’s national executive committee agreed to release the number, which stood at 72,186 in February 2023, up from 104,000 members in 2021.

Murrell quit out of favor after Nats headquarters – which he headed for 24 years – fibbed about falling membership, with the party losing 30,000 members in a matter of months.

Has Murrell been arrested?

Peter Murrell was arrested today in connection with an investigation into the handling of the Scottish National Party’s finances.
