Who Is Breakthrough Trans Star Daniela Vega?

The new sci-fi drama from Amazon Prime Video The power has just released and features an impressive female-led cast including trans powerhouse Daniela Vega.

The series is based on the novel of the same name by author Naomi Alderman, which became an international hit when it was released in 2016.

The TV adaptation dropped last week (March 31) and follows several main characters as they navigate a new world where teenage girls have developed the power to electrocute people at will.

The main characters include Toni Collette as Mayor Margot Cleary-Lopez, whose teenage daughter developed the power, Ria Zmitrowicz as Roxy Monke, the daughter of a British gangster who uses the power to avenge her murdered mother, and Halle Bush as Allie , a teenage girl fleeing her abusive foster family and flees to a convent on the other side of the United States.

Chilean actress Daniela Vega will play Sister Maria and play a central role in the development of Allie’s character throughout the series.

Who is Daniela Vega?

Daniela Vega may not be a household name yet, but she’s already had quite an illustrious career to this day.

The 33-year-old actress is best known for her starring role in the 2018 drama film A fantastic womanwhich won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film as a breakthrough for Transkino in 2018.

Considering her outstanding performance in the film, many critics expected Vega to receive a Best Actress nomination, although unfortunately that didn’t materialize.

The film follows Vega as Marina, a trans woman and waitress who is simultaneously grappling with the death of her partner Orlando and her family’s relentless transphobia.

Critics praised Vegas’ “layered and emotionally polymorphic” performance, and the role catapulted her to a new level of recognition.

Also in 2018, at the age of just 28, Vega presented herself as the first openly transgender woman at the Oscars.

Since her Oscar success, Vega has starred in Netflix dramas stories of the cityalongside Elliot Page, Bob The Drag Queen and Murray Bartlett.

“I started working on this book in 2011. It was a long journey. And conversations about diversity, about intersectionality, conversations about feminism, I think have evolved a lot,” Alderman told The Evening Standard.

Discussing the addition of a trans character to the TV series, Alderman added, “This feels like something readers have certainly been asking me about. And I was like, ‘Oh no, I just didn’t think of that.'”

What has Daniela Vega said about her role in The power?

Not much, to be honest. However, Vega has previously spoken out about her trans identity and future career goals as an actress.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, Vega explained why her role in the critically acclaimed series A fantastic woman important.

“The fact that I’m trans brings a higher level of truth to the script and story. But more importantly, it opens a door into the film world that had never been explored before because I’m a trans actress playing a trans woman,” she said.

She added that her dream would be to work with Pedro Almodóvar, who is currently directing a Brokeback Mountain Rival starring Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke.
