Until season 2, Eepisode 6 from HBO MAX white lotus, the gleaming facade of indulgent wealth and boundless vice is about to collapse. Newbie tech millionaire Ethan (Will Sharpe) has driven himself insane thinking his uptight and anxious wife Harper (Aubrey Plaza) was cheating on him with college roommate Cameron (Theo James); miserable Gen Z assistant Portia (Haley Lu Richardson) is increasingly frightened by how little she knows about her once-dreamy vacation flirtation, Jack (Leo Woodall); and the ever gullible Tanya (Jennifer Coolidge) is heading towards bankruptcy in the merry but devious company of gay fake aristocrats. But for uptight Four Seasons hotel manager Valentina (Sabrina Impacciatore), who’s been silently and awkwardly grappling with her weirdness all season, things are just beginning to blossom.

Valentina finds herself vulnerable and sexually aroused after spending the night with Mia (Beatrice Grannò), the sex worker-turned-hotel pianist who struck a deal with her after accidentally drugging the hotel’s usual musician. In return for her vocal performance, Mia quipped in an earlier episode, “You’re gay, right? I’m a little bit gay too. Give me this job and I promise you and I we can have some fun.” At the time, Valentina was horrified by the proposal and crushed the opportunity before anything came to pass.

But after she finally worked up the courage to invite her crush, receptionist Isabella (Eleonora Romandini), out for a birthday drink, Valentina is devastated to find out that Isabella is actually engaged to her other worker, Rocco (Federico Ferrante). Later that evening, drinking alone at the hotel bar, Mia approaches the dejected manager and recall her that the sex Offer still stands. After a few moments of embarrassed resistance and a heartbreaking confession that she’s never been with a woman, Valentina relents and the two sneak into an empty hotel suite to fool around. What follows is as touching as it is racy – instead of denying herself sexual pleasure, Valentina gives up the illusion of control that stands in the way of her happiness all along.

By pushing them to break their own rules of leadership and limits, Mia offers Valentina a sense of adventure so lacking in her character, someone Impacciatore himself describes as “repressed and compressed.” “[Valentina] has a huge internal conflict,” explained Impacciatore in a last job interview With diversity. “She doesn’t know herself until something happens and she can’t escape.”

And while those scenes were certainly earth-shattering for Valentina, the experience (which was the actor’s first sex scene in 25 years of acting) was equally impressive for Impacciatore. After filming the scene where Valentina admits she had never been with a woman, Impacciatore recalls empathizing deeply with her character. “I remember what I felt. I didn’t act, I lived that character’s conflict very intensely,” she recalled. “I understood how people who don’t accept themselves live their lives?” Because queer people “have no rights” in Italy Impacciatore said She “was beginning to understand the responsibilities of being an actress. We should accept and respect each different nature. So that scene was a deep experience for me.”

And how to the Valentina: “She’s free at last.”

In a show full man butt and gigantic prosthetic shlongsTo see these two women – who are both still learning about themselves – share such a tender moment of intimacy was exciting in a whole new way. While Mia may have motives other than giving Valentina a good time, it’s one of the few scenes on the show where sex isn’t overtly weaponized — whether through coercion, restraint, or to cover up past transgressions — which gives him a clear one emotional resonance lends from the rest of the season. Valentina is soft in a way that she tries so hard not to be and learns what happens when she tends to become more herself.

It is unlikely that Valentina and Mia are on the way to becoming it true lovers—At least MiaShe’s just learning that her sex can get her what she wants – but the course of her experience matters little compared to what she’s allowed to open up to. “It’s something that will change [Valentina’s] Live forever,” Impacciatore said in an HBO MAX clip unwrapping the episode. “I think Valentina is probably finally accepting the idea that a new life might be possible for her.”
