Wharton HS stabbing: 2 students wounded, 2 in custody after lunchtime scuffle on campus, police say

WHARTON, Texas (KTRK) — The stabbing incident that led to Wharton High School’s lockdown on Wednesday afternoon happened during a lunchtime fight between several students, in which two of them were injured.

The Wharton Independent School District responded to previous reports from the Wharton County Precinct 2 Constable’s Office, which confirmed that two students received treatment after the stabbing.

The Wharton Police Department added that around 1:20 p.m., school district law enforcement received reports of multiple stabbings at the high school

“Two suspects were located by officers and deputies and quickly taken into custody,” Wharton PD wrote in a press release.

The wounded students were both awake and conscious, police added.

An important point that the police wanted to clarify was that the stabbing appears to have been caused by the students and not by anyone from outside breaking into the school. All other students are safe, the school district said.

The only information from Wharton PD that differed from that of the school district considered the transportation of the victims.

In a letter from Superintendent Michael J. O’Guin Sr., one student was taken to a local hospital while another was flown by Life Flight for medical attention. But police said both were flown to Houston for treatment.

Other facts explained by the Superintendent included that the only weapon involved was a knife and that all other students were safe.

In the afternoon, the high school, as well as Wharton Junior High School a mile away, were lifted from lockdown and students would be released via standard reunion process, the superintendent wrote.

The school district informed parents of what is required to reunite with their children:

Parents of Wharton HS students enter the main entrance of Wharton HS. You must have valid ID to pick up your child. Parents are greeted by district officials and escorted to the reunion site to pick up their students. Students are only shared with those on the emergency contact list on the student’s profile page.Parents of Wharton Junior High students should go to the back of the Wharton HS campus near the pool. Wharton ISD has adjourned the investigation to Wharton PD.
