Westheimer hit-and-run: Army veteran Jerry Young’s family asks for help identifying whoever hit him with the car

HOUSTON, TX (KTRK) — An army veteran was killed while walking on Westheimer Road and his family is asking the public for help in identifying those responsible.

Houston police officers were called to the 8800 block of Westheimer Road at approximately 5:15 a.m. on Friday, September 16. Officers determined the veteran, identified as Jerry Young, was trying to cross the street on his walker before he was hit.

Young is said to have been struck by a vehicle and dragged for over a mile.

The driver never stopped to render assistance, investigators said.

“To drag him a mile and a half, I need to know why. Why did they do this? Why did they leave him in body parts? He was a person who had people who cared about him,” Jerilynn Johns, Young’s ex-wife, said.

According to Johns, Young was an Army veteran deployed to Germany in the 1970s and served.

They shared two children; He had a brother, a sister and an extended family who loved him dearly.

Young struggled with substance abuse and a mental disorder, but he showed his love for his children in the only way he knew how, Johns said.

“He thought it would do him good if he stayed away.”

Young’s ex-wife also said he refused his family’s protection and help and became homeless. Johns says she believes it was due to a lack of services to help veterans.

But his family is seeking and fighting for justice for the man who served his country.

“Someone out there needs to know because someone came home that day with a badly damaged car or they didn’t bring the car home and their story doesn’t add up.”

“Please be careful when you see pedestrians. You have the right of way,” Johns said.

Crime Stoppers can pay up to $5,000 for any information leading to the indictment and/or arrest of the suspect(s). Information may be reported by phone at 713-222-TIPS (8477) or submitted online.
