The Foo Fighters drummer died on March 25 at the age of 50. He was found in his hotel room in Bogotá, Colombia, hours before the band was due to headline a festival in the city as part of a South American tour.
Marr played the Smiths Classic at Cardiff’s Great Hall on Sunday (3 April). “This is a song we want to dedicate to our friend Dave Grohl,” he said, introducing the track.
“Lots of love to you and all the Foos family. We miss you Taylor, we will never forget you. God bless you. This is from all of us.”
Elsewhere, during his set, Marr performed The Smiths’ “Panic” and “This Charming Man,” as well as a cover of Depeche Mode’s “I Feel You.” He returned for an encore to perform “Bigmouth Strikes Again” and “How Soon Is Now?”.
The Grammys commemorated Hawkins with a special tribute at the ceremony in Las Vegas last night (April 3).
“That was the moment on the show for me to introduce the Foo Fighters,” host Trevor Noah explained during the ceremony. “We would have celebrated with them as they won three Grammy Awards earlier today.
“But of course they’re not here because their legendary drummer, Taylor Hawkins, has passed away. Our thoughts are with Taylor’s family, his friends, the Foo Fighter family and all of their fans around the world. We want to take a moment now to remember Taylor.”
Earlier in the ceremony, Billie paid tribute to Eilish Hawkins during her performance of “Happier Than Ever.” For the performance, the hit star wore a T-shirt with the late rock star on the front.
In other news, Johnny Marr and Modest Mouse announced last month that they had started working together on new music, which would be their first since Marr’s tenure with the band from 2006-08.
Speak with NME Last year, Marr said, “I want it to happen one day.”
“I’m not shy – I just miss her. We have planned so much for the next few years. We have the double album, we’re touring and then I’ll probably do another film, but I’d probably have to do a new record with Isaac. They’re the only band I would rejoin.”
