Villa Park’s Gavin Grahovac has ‘all the tools’ and a hunger to win – Orange County Register

Villa Park junior Gavin Grahovac has had a genetic start when it comes to baseball.

He also grew up in the right environment for it.

His father, Mike Grahovac, was a brilliant catcher at Chapman University and played in the San Francisco Giants minor league system.

When Mike was in coaching, including at Orange Lutheran and then at Concordia University in Irvine, where he led the team to the NAIA national championship, Gavin was there.

Mike said: “Gavin always practiced hitting the ball with us. “I threw a dirt ball to him when he was 3 years old and he can throw a ball on the ground.”

Gavin Grahovac, now 6 feet 2 and weighs 200 pounds, developed into an outstanding baseball player in high school.

Several baseball-focused websites have labeled the best young player in California. Grahovac, who signed for Texas A&M, was praised for his speed, power, overall fitness and defensive versatility.

He spent most of his youth baseball life as a catcher before moving to a shortstop at Villa Park.

“Ever since I was little, I wanted to try every position,” says Gavin. “When I got into high school, I decided to play wherever they needed me to play.”

Villa Park coach Burt Call, an All-CIF baseball player at Capistrano Valley High before becoming a starting quarterback at BYU, said Grahovac is a multi-skilled player.

“He had all the tools,” Call said. “Gavin can throw the ball well and he can hit it with power. He is a complete player.

“What separates him from other players is his competitiveness. He loves to win.”

Gravhovac was the Crestview League’s MVP last season when, in 28 games, he had 39 touchdowns, six home runs, 10 doubles, two trebles and 24 RBIs. His batting average is 0.411.

Call and Mike Grahovac guesses that Gavin’s baseball future will be as a third player. For now, the shortstop suits him.

“I like being the guy in the middle where you can see everything,” he said.

Grahovac took an informal visit to Texas A&M over the Thanksgiving break and liked it enough to make it his college destination.

“The people there were amazing and so was the coaching staff,” he said. “It’s something that I want to be a part of.”

Of course, Grahovac is an MLB Draft prospect.

“We’re hearing a lot of good things about that,” said Mike Grahovac. “He just has to keep doing what he’s doing.”

Gavin recognizes the challenges ahead.

“I will see stronger pitchers and stronger hitters,” he said. “I try to exercise every day, get work done every day.”

He did that for a long time.
