Ex-NFL star arrested on Tuesday morning
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Las Vegas Metro Police Department has released body camera videos of officers interacting with former NFL running back Marshawn Lynch and then arresting him.
Police released the videos Thursday, two days after Lynch’s arrest on suspicion of DUI. Officers arrested Lynch, 36, around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Officials said they found Lynch “asleep behind the wheel with the vehicle in an undriveable condition.” The car, a 2020 Shelby GT500 coupe, was not registered, according to police.
The videos, which are essentially the same event footage from multiple angles, show Lynch in the car with the door open and a tire missing from one wheel.
“I’m not driving,” Lynch tells officers. “The car isn’t on.”
The officers then pull him out of the car and handcuff him. Officers determined that he smelled of alcohol.
“No more games today,” an officer said while handcuffing Lynch.
Other videos show officers discussing their investigation into Lynch’s arrest.
“He did a few laps through parking lots,” an officer said. “I’ve followed all of his markings and they lead back here.”
“I’ve never seen the guy,” another officer said.
“He’s one of the toughest running backs. He runs over people,” replied another.
Nextstars KLAS digital reporter Duncan Phenix contacted the California dealership that sold the car. A person there said Lynch bought the car in December 2019. A listing for sale said the car’s MSRP was $170,000.
Lynch faces charges of DUI alcohol and/or drugs, failure or refusal to provide proof of insurance, driving an unregistered vehicle, and staying out of lane.
He is expected in Las Vegas City Court on December 7th.
Lynch most recently played for the Seattle Seahawks and played for the then-Oakland Raiders in the 2017-18 season. The five-time Pro Bowler, affectionately dubbed “Beast Mode” by fans for his ability to run over tacklers, won a Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks in 2014.
“Marshawn was not pulled over for drunk driving,” Lynch’s attorneys Richard Schonfeld and David Chesnoff told 8 News Now. “Rather, the vehicle was safely parked and not in operation. We are confident that if all the evidence is presented, this will not be a DUI under Nevada law. Marshawn appreciates and is grateful for everyone’s concern and support.”
