US fighter jet downed unknown object over northern Canada – Orange County Register

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Saturday that a US warplane, on his orders, shot down an unidentified object flying high over northern Canada, a day after US planes carried out similar actions over Alaska.

Shortly before Trueau’s tweet, the North American Aerospace Defense Command said it had spotted an object flying at high altitude over Canada. NORAD provided no other information, including when the object was first discovered or what it is.
One Sokesman, Maj. Olivier Gallant, said both Canadian and US fighter jets operating as part of NORAD were deployed.
Trudeau then announced on Twitter:
I ordered an unidentified object shot down that violated Canadian airspace. @NORADcommand shot down the object over the Yukon. Canadian and US aircraft were scrambled, and a US F-22 successfully fired on the object.

The object was the third known to have violated North American airspace in the past two weeks.
In a second tweet, Trudeau said, “I spoke to President Biden this afternoon. Canadian forces will now recover and analyze the debris from the object. Thank you NORAD for keeping watch over North America.”
A suspected Chinese spy balloon flew through Canada and US airspace for nearly a week before being shot down by US warplanes off South Carolina last Sunday.
The US military shot down a second object in Alaskan airspace on Friday, although authorities have not given details of what it was.
Salvage operations continued Saturday both near Deadhorse, Alaska, and off South Carolina, according to the US Northern Command.
In a statement, Northern Command said there were no new details about what the target was that a US fighter jet shot down over Alaska. It said the Alaska Command and Alaska National Guard, along with the FBI and local law enforcement agencies, were conducting search and recovery operations.
“Arctic weather conditions, including wind chill, snow and limited daylight, are a factor in this operation and personnel will adjust salvage operations to ensure safety,” the statement said. “Recovery activities take place on sea ice.”
It added that the Navy continued survey and salvage activities on the seabed off South Carolina and the Coast Guard provided security. More debris was pulled out on Friday and more operations will continue weather permitting, the statement said.
