Up to $700 for IL Residents: How to Receive Your Tax Refund Check

ILLINOIS — Tax refunds have hit bank accounts and PO boxes across Illinois for the past three weeks. If you qualify and haven’t received your check yet, the deadline to submit the required forms is fast approaching.

The Illinois 2022 tax rebates are one-time payments to eligible Illinois residents approved under the Illinois Family Relief Plan. The checks consist of two different rebates: one for individual income tax and one for property tax.

Do you need to apply for the discounts?

If you submitted your state taxes, primarily via a 2021 IL-1040 form, no further action is required and the combined rebates will be sent to you automatically.

If you have not submitted a 2021 IL-1040, including those who were not required to do so, you have until October 17 to submit it to the Illinois Department of Revenue (IDR).

  • If you have dependents, you must also complete/have completed an Appendix E/EIC for the income tax refund.
  • For property tax refunds, you must have filed both the 2021 IL-1040 and a Schedule ICR. In lieu of these two documents, a special Property Tax Refund Form (IL-1040-PTR) can be submitted either electronically or on paper. Instructions for the IL-1040-PTR can be found here.

Who qualifies for a check?

In order to receive the Individual Income Tax Refund, you must have:

  • Illinois residents in 2021 (even if only part of the year)
  • Had an adjusted gross income in 2021 of less than $200,000 if filed as an individual or less than $400,000 if filed jointly

To get the property tax refund you need:

  • Illinois residents in 2021 (even if only part of the year)
  • Illinois Property Taxes Paid in 2021 for 2020 Primary Residence Taxes
  • Had an adjusted gross income in 2021 of less than $250,000 if filed as an individual or less than $500,000 if filed jointly

How much is your check?

The amount of the income tax refund is determined according to the following criteria:

  • If you are registered as an individual, you will receive $50
  • If you submit jointly, you will receive $100 ($50 per person).
  • If you submitted with dependents, you will receive an additional $100 per up to three dependents or $300

So a family of two adults and three children will receive an income tax refund of the maximum of $400.

The property tax refund is equal to the property tax you could claim against your taxes in 2021, up to a maximum of $300. See Illinois Publication 108 for more information on the property tax credit.

When do you get your check?

The first distributions went out the week of September 12, and state officials estimated it will take them six to seven weeks to fully distribute the $1.2 billion to approximately six million eligible taxpayers.

This schedule sets the latest estimated delivery after the required document submission deadline of October 17th. So if you are unsure, it is important to check the status of your discount.

How to check the status of your discount

According to the state’s 2022 State of Illinois Tax Rebates website, taxpayers can check the status of their rebates by using the Where’s My Rebate? page. Application.

To use the where is my discount Application you must have:

  • Your name and Social Security Number (SSN) or Tax Identification Number (ITIN) and
  • Your 2021 Adjusted Gross Income Amount as reported on your 2021 Illinois Individual Income Tax Return Form IL-1040 or Property Tax Rebate Form IL-1040-PTR, or Your IL PIN, obtained via the IL PIN Query application.

Will the rebate affect your state or federal taxes in 2022?

While the rebate is exempt from Illinois income tax, the IDR notes that it may affect federal income tax for those who itemize their deductions.
