Unknown Mortal Orchestra releases new single Nadja and unveils intimate video directed by Vira-Lata

Indie rock band Unknown Mortal Orchestra present their latest single ‘Nadja’ ahead of the release of their highly anticipated album V.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra has just released their new single “Nadja” along with the second video in a series of Vira Lata staged visual narratives that began with their recent release “Layla,” which The New York Times dubbed “full of warmth, with a soulful vocal melody.”

The upcoming double album V, to be released March 17th via Jagjaguwar, is helmed by Hawaiian-New Zealand musician Ruban Nielson and is a mix of West Coast AOR, classic hits, werdo pop and hapa-haole music from Hawaii. This album marks Nielson’s first double album and it shapes and enriches the path that has led him to this moment.

The 14-track V features sing-along anthems, cinematic instrumentals, and mischievous pop songs that evoke the sense of blue skies, beachside cocktail bars, hotel pools, and the darkness that lurks beneath perfect, pristine surfaces. Nielson spent his childhood playing at hotel pools with his siblings while their parents performed in show bands across the Pacific and East Asia, inspiring the desert city’s palm-lined streets. Nielson is now aware of the glamorous hedonism he embraced growing up and the darker side of his parents’ lifestyles when they were entertainers.

Nielson shares that one of V’s primary goals is to create music and art that transcends notions of punch and cultural relevance while bringing fun back into the process of making music. With V, Nielson reclaims taste as a personal part of self, propelling UMO to new creative heights. V is also about having fun with music and art, and in doing so, Nielson combines his Polynesian heritage and nonsense with his love of music. The early days of the pandemic brought Nielson closer to his family, and his experiences during that time helped him create an album that’s fun, honest, and filled with beauty.
