WANATAH, Indiana (AP) — A semi truck detached from its tractor and was struck by a passenger vehicle, killing a Northwest Indiana woman and her son and injuring a second child on Tuesday, police said.
The crash killed Angela J. Oehmen, 36, of Wanatah, and 14-year-old Joseph I. Oehmen, the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office said.
“A second youth who was an occupant of the vehicle sustained an upper body injury. This youth was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment,” the sheriff’s office said.
The trailer driver, a 47-year-old man from Fulton, Indiana, was not injured, police said.
The semi-trailer was turning onto US 30 from a rest area near the town of Wanatah just before 8 a.m. when the trailer became detached from the tractor unit, police said.
According to police, the car hit the rear of the trailer.
