Toxic Substances Found in Mickey Mouse and ‘Star Wars’ Hand Sanitizer: Recall Alert

Some Disney-themed hand sanitizer products have been voluntarily recalled after FDA testing revealed toxic substances.

Affected products include The Mandalorian Hand Sanitizer Ethyl Alcohol 68%, available in green and blue formulations; and Mickey Mouse Hand Sanitizer ethyl alcohol 68% blue formulation, reports the US Food and Drug Administration.

The agency’s tests revealed the presence of the human carcinogen benzene in The Mandalorian hand sanitizer. Significant exposure to benzene can lead to cancer. Baby Yoda, a character from the Disney+ Original Series and set in the Star Wars universe, is featured on the packaging of this sanitizer.

Tests have also found methanol in the Mickey Mouse Hand Sanitizer product, which can be toxic if accidentally ingested. Significant exposure to methanol may cause nausea, vomiting, coma, seizures, permanent damage to the central nervous system; and other hazards, the FDA said. The packaging has a picture of Mickey Mouse on the front.
