Tom Brady adds more NFL records to continue in a game against the Falcons

In just one game Sunday afternoon, quarterback Tom Brady of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers broke two NFL records, contributing to a career worthy of the Hall of Fame.

Brady only played five offensive drives for the Bucs in their 30-17 loss to Atlanta — they didn’t need him to play the entire game since the NFC South title was already suspended.

In the second quarter, Brady found Russell Gage Jr. for a five-yard pass. It’s usually an easy finish for positive yards, but Brady broke the NFL record for most pass attempts and most completions in a single season with that drop back and throw.

It was the veteran signal caller’s 486th finish of the season, but that was nothing new for Brady. He broke his own record from a season ago with Tampa Bay.

The other record, his 728th pass attempt, broke Matthew Stafford’s record with the Detroit Lions in 2012, although Stafford did so in 16 games.

Brady certainly has enough records and milestones to make a long list for his career resume, and though he only required seven completions and 12 returns, post-game reporters asked head coach Todd Bowles why the starters played as long as they did.

“We can get better at a lot of things we need to work on,” he replied via Yahoo! Sport, “and we don’t need to take our foot off the gas.”

It’s true that the Bucs didn’t look like them compared to the first two seasons that focused on Brady. They ranked 15th in total offense during the regular season, averaging 346.7 yards per game, most of which were through the air. They put up 269.8 yards of passing yards per game while rushing just 76.9 yards.

The Bucs have also struggled on the offensive line all season due to injuries and poor play. That hampered the offense’s ability to let plays develop downfield and forced Brady to get the ball out quickly.

Brady also hit a milestone that he won’t be bowing to in his Hall of Fame speech (although it’s still pretty impressive). Going 8-9 on the year, Brady had his first losing season in 23 years.

Still, poor play worked in Brady’s favor throughout the NFC South, allowing him another trip to the playoffs and they will have at least one home game against the Dallas Cowboys next Monday during wild card weekend.
