THT, TNB hosted a Super Saturday title showdown

KUALA TERENGGANU: The battle for the Malaysia Hockey League (MHL) Premier Division title will come to a head on the last day of this Saturday with Terengganu Hockey Team (THT) and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB).

Both sides flexed their muscles today as they celebrated a goal fest against hapless opponents at the Kuala Terengganu City Council (MBKT) Ice Hockey Stadium.

Whilst defending champions THT defeated Nurinsafi Sporting 6-2 in the evening, TNB defeated junior team TNB Thunderbolts 14-1 earlier in the day at the same venue.

As of today, after 13 games, THT sits at the top of the eight-team table with 37 points, while TNB is second with 34 points.

However, TNB has a better goal difference of 62 compared to THT’s 49.

That means THT only needs a draw to retain the title at MBKT Hockey Stadium on Saturday, while TNB needs an overall win.

In the game between THT and Nurinsafi Sporting, South Korea’s penalty taker Jang Jonghyun stole the show with four goals (second, fourth, 13th and 19th minutes).

National team players Muhammad Marhan Mohd Jalil (4th minute) and Faizal Saari (31st) headed one each, while Nurinsafi responded with field goals from importer Joshua Benedict (28th minute) and Haikal Nilesh Hrsikesa (56th).

Meanwhile, TNB, looking for an end to their 20-year league title drought, showed their juniors no mercy as they went in pursuit of goals.

International striker Muhammad Azrai Aizad Abu Kamal was in seventh heaven after scoring seven goals (sixth, 21st, 21st, 33rd, 34th, 47th and 53rd minutes) to remain the Premier Division’s top scorer with 37 goals.

The other TNB scorers were Muhammad Najib Abu Hassan (12th, 15th), Skipper Muhammad Firhan Ashari (18th and 20th) and one each from Muhammad Shahril Saabah (1st), Muhammad Amirul Hanif Mamat (28th) and Muhammad Azri Hassan (41st).

TNB Thunderbolts scored a consolation goal in the third minute through Muhamad Luqman Fauzi. -Bernama THT, TNB hosted a Super Saturday title showdown
