In his letter “Idiots Delight,” Anthony Mills charts the decline of American leadership “from the aftermath of the Vietnam War” to the present day.
Along the way, every step in the decline of “our proud and virtuous country” is ominously “noted by Vladimir and Co.” And such pitifully vague leadership sins “V & Co.” have seen in American leadership: “elegant language … going with the flow … directionlessness of the time” and “politicians fill the vacuum of entertainment”. And as all rascals must, he conjures up the Nazis: Germany’s takeover of Poland on baseless allegations is akin to “V & Co.” attacks on Ukraine, suggesting that our lack of quality leadership since the mid-1970s “V & Co.” Permission to repeat Nazi aggression.
Mr. Mills longs for the time (mid 1940’s) when the US had just conquered the world and “V & Co.” would not have dared such aggression. Mr. Mills takes the title of his letter, “Idiots Delight,” from a 1939 Hollywood film before Hollywood fell by the wayside and politicians took over the entertainment for us. Mr. Mills’ attitude toward history and international affairs is that of someone quite fortunate not to know.
US international leadership has been quite effective twice since the collapse of Vietnam: once when Iraq invaded Kuwait, and again when Serbia killed Muslims (whom we called “ethnic Albanians”). President Bush XXXXI and President Clinton are each leading a broad coalition of allies to stop the slaughter and restore international order. This international leadership was polluted when President Bush XXXXIII led a smaller WMD coalition into Iraq that was never there.
Does the seizure of Iraq on baseless allegations remind Mr. Mills of anyone? “V&Co.” noticed and then took Georgia and Crimea.
Does the conquest of California from Mexico and (our) Georgia from the Cherokee give any American any right to moral superiority?
