This Week in Texas: Episode Six, which focuses on redistribution and the newly drawn congressional district

HOUSTON, TX (KTRK) — The new issue of This Week in Texas looks at the redistribution, specifically with a newly drawn congressional district in Houston.

The 38th congressional district consists of Republican Wesley Hunt and Democrat Duncan Klussmann. ABC13 political reporter Tom Abrahams sits down with both candidates to hear what’s important to them as they try to represent one of two new counties in the ever-growing state of Texas.

“I’m running for Congress because I believe gerrymandering is destroying our democracy,” Klussmann told ABC13 exclusively.

“And we have legislators in Austin, career politicians, who make those districts available to one party or another. In fact, only two counties are considered competitive in Texas where you really have a choice of two different viewpoints if you go in November. I just think there’s something fundamentally wrong,” said Klussmann.

Hunt ran for Congress in 2020 against District 7 incumbent Lizzie Fletcher and lost in a close contest. In 2022 he is the unaffordable favorite.

“This is going to be a pretty strong Republican district and it fits right in with who I am,” Hunt said. “We ran last time, came up short. We will not give up. Get back on the horse right away and keep running and I think our hard work over the past four years has really paid off.”

Also in the program, Baker Institute policy fellow Mark Jones explains how the lines differ this election cycle in Texas.

A group of political insiders will be present in this episode to give their take on the race.
