The world’s largest whiskey bottle: Anonymous revealed

Businessman Viet Nguyen Dinh Tuan this week added the 5ft 11in bottle known as “The Intrepid” to his collection in Ho Chi Minh City, along with the official Guinness World Records certificate, which it holds as a honors the largest in the world.

Conceived by Daniel Monk of Cask World and Rosewin Holdings, the 311-litre bottle was filled with 32-year-old Macallan Single Malt Scotch and bottled on behalf of Mr Monk at Duncan Taylor’s in Huntly before being auctioned at Lyon & Turnbull in Edinburgh more than £1million last year.

The name The Intrepid pays homage to the drive and achievements of 11 of the world’s most pioneering explorers featured on the bottle, including Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, Dr. Geoff Wilson, Karen Darke, Olly Hicks and Jamie Ramsay.

A seasoned investor in rare spirits, Mr. Viet is celebrated for his three-decade passion for finding the rarest, oldest and most exquisite bottles of cognac and whiskey in the world.

Treasures come together in Intrepid’s new home, including the world’s only complete Macallan Fine & Rare range, the world’s largest bottle of cognac, the world’s oldest bottle of whiskey – believed to be nearly 150 years old – and many other rare and highly valuable whiskey bottles and cognacs .

Mr. Viet said: “I’ve been spending my free time collecting these bottles for decades. The history and traditions of whiskey making give each one its rarity and that is the value I see in each bottle.

“I was compelled to purchase The Intrepid for three main reasons: the fact that it is the largest bottle in the world, contains Macallan and because I was inspired by the record-breaking achievements of the 11 explorers depicted on the bottle’s label are.”

Mr Monk said: “Visiting Mr Viet’s sacred whiskey collection was an unforgettable experience, it truly is a whiskey and cognac enthusiast’s paradise.

“It was a dream come true to see The Intrepid proudly displayed and added to the whiskey war chest of such a knowledgeable and passionate collector.

“He preserves the whiskey history. It was an honor for us to be guests of Mr. Viet and to see his remarkable collection firsthand.”

As well as presenting Mr Viet with the Guinness World Records certificate, Mr Monk presented the new owner of The Intrepid with an impressive, whimsical piece of art that he commissioned to depict the project journey.

The mixed media painting by renowned Cornish artist Susan Haseman was warmly received by Mr Viet and plans to hang it on the wall alongside The Intrepid.
