The viral video of a preacher insulting PDRM is an old clip: Bukit Aman

KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) have confirmed that viral video of a preacher making offensive and defamatory remarks against the police is an old clip.

The 55-second clip shows the preacher berating cops who were on speed trap and roadblock duty for not performing their Friday prayers.

PDRM’s head of corporate communications, ACP A. Skandaguru, said the checks revealed that the video was taken in 2016 and that action was also taken against the individual.

According to him, on August 26, 2016, the speaker was charged with defamation under Section 500 of the Criminal Code in Penang’s Barat Daya Magistrate’s Court and fined RM7,000 after pleading guilty to the charges.

“The public is reminded to always exercise caution when making statements and to avoid defamatory remarks that could create confusion in society,” he said in a statement today.

He also advised the public not to disseminate or share the video clip on social media as they may face action under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. –Bernama
