The story of Donald Glover’s “Diversity Hire” at 30 Rock

A new Donald Glover quote is manufacturing The Round after a GQ profile of the multi-hyphenated entertainer was released on Tuesday. In it, Glover recalls his first appearance as a TV writer for the Tina Fey-created 30 rocks, while he was still in college. “There’s no animosity between us or anything, though [Tina Fey] said so himself… It was a matter of diversity,” Glover said.

“There’s no animosity between us or anything like that‘ is a good way of suggesting that there is indeed animosity – at least on paper! It’s like prefixing something offensive by saying, “No offense.” However, the would-be revelation of this is new GQ profile has actually been on the airwaves for years and was publicly confirmed by Fey, suggesting that there is in fact no animosity. He noted that the color of his own skin certainly influenced his career, beginning with his first job as a writer 30 rocks. “I asked myself, ‘Am I getting hired just because I’m black?'” Tina Fey, the show’s creator and star, told me the answer was mostly yes; she admired Glover’s talent but hired him because funding from NBC’s Diversity Initiative “made him do it free.”

In Fey’s 2011 memoir men’s pantsshe wrote: “Donald was our only African-American writer at the time, but his real diversity was that he was our only ‘cool kid’ who could tell us what the ‘kids were hearing these days’.” Determining Glover’s “true diversity”” ( and concluding that it wasn’t his blackness). sooo Fey, but the point is that this conversation that’s happening now happened. In the GQ profile, Glover also shared his fear of writing for writing 30 rocks. “It definitely didn’t feel like I was supposed to be there,” he said. “I used to have nightly stress dreams of cartwheeling on top of a New York skyscraper with the other writers watching me,” he added blackish Creator Kenya Barris was also ready for the performance. “I didn’t know until later that it was between me and him.
