The Star Wars boss reportedly prevented the announcement of Marvel’s Harrison Ford at D23

Rumors have been circulating for the past few days that Han Solo actor Harrison Ford has been cast as secretary Thaddeus E. “Thunderbolt” Ross in Thunderbolts 2024. The report indicated that Ford was or is Marvel Studios’ first choice to tackle the recast of Ross thunderboltsbut it was unclear whether this was a done deal.

William Hurt previously played the Prime Minister The incredible Hulk until Black widow, although the MCU veteran passed away earlier this year. Ford would replace Hurt as Thunderbolts’ namesake, having filled the role on five MCU outings for 13 years.

Now, Marvel Studios seems interested in keeping Ross in the MCU with a role in 2024 thunderbolts next on the cards. Ford is already in a relationship with Disney after returning as Han Solo for The Force Awakens and just recently played in Indiana Jones 5 – which took the spotlight for the first time at the D23.

Who knows when Ford’s MCU casting will be made official, but it seems that if it were up to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, it would have happened at D23 as early as last month.

Speaking on the Hot Mic Podcast is The Ankler’s Jeff Sneider, who previously broke the news that Harrison Ford is lined up for the role of a newly cast Secretary Ross thunderboltshas claimed Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy prevented the announcement at D23.

According to Sneider, Ford’s casting was “a closed deal for D23” but the Lucasfilm President “Put your foot down” to keep focus Indiana Jones 5rather than allow the discussion to shift to Ford joining the MCU:

“So what I initially heard was that this was a done deal for D23, that they actually wanted to announce him as a cast member in Thunderbolts at D23, but they didn’t because Kathleen Kennedy hit the gas and said, ‘No , We will continue to focus on Indiana Jones 5 content. I don’t want Harrison Ford to join the MCU, we will continue to focus on Indy 5 for now.

Is Harrison Ford really joining the MCU?

Based on Sneider’s comments, Harrison Ford replaced William Hurt as “Thunderbolt” Ross appears to be a done deal. The D23 is the first major showcase for Indiana Jones 5Kathleen Kennedy may have been wise to keep the focus on that rather than pulling it toward Ford’s MCU future.

Nonetheless, recasting Hurt as Ross will no doubt prove controversial, especially after Marvel Studios’ insistence on not replacing Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa after his death. One can only wonder what led to the decision that the scenario differs from this one, but it likely hints at big plans for Ross.

Given that Ross shares a military nickname with the Thunderbolts, he may be the one to put together the team in the 2024 film. Perhaps Valentina was even sent by Ross to recruit US agents and Yelena Belova by Julia Louis-Dreyfus while he attempts to form the Thunderbolts under his watchful eye.

With the MCU veteran being a driving force behind the Sokovia Accords and keen to bring the Avengers under government control, creating his own team to command into battle would be perfect for Ross. But whether he will step onto the field himself is another question entirely.

In Marvel Comics, Ross is known to become the Red Hulk after requiring gamma-infused abilities from AIM and Intelligencia. Interestingly, the latter just entered the MCU She-Hulk: Lawyer and seems hell-bent on making more Hulks, so this could be the direction Marvel Studios is headed in.

At 80, of course, and only recently injured on set Indiana Jones 5, he probably won’t be interested in getting involved in much action. This will allow Ford to be a powerful player in the MCU in a key role, while having a proxy handle motion capture for every Red Hulk action.

thunderbolts hits theaters on July 26, 2024, however Indiana Jones 5 will arrive before June 30, 2023.
